Full Moon dates for 2010
Thursday 23rd September 2010

There is nothing some of the OSS team like more than drifting downstream in their favourite stretch of river under a full moon.

There are obviously huge safety considerations involved in night swimming, (so we always advise not to do it) but  for those that are willing at their own risk, to swim under the full moon; here are 2010's  moon-rise / sunset times, are:

  • Saturday 30 Jan, 05:30 pm / 04:46 pm
  • Sunday 28 Feb, 05:50 pm / 05:40 pm
  • Tuesday 30 Mar, 08:40 pm / 07:30 pm
  • Wed 28 April, 09:00 pm / 08:20 pm
  • Friday 28 May, 10:10 pm / 09:00 pm
  • Sat 26 June, 09:30 pm / 09:20 pm
  • Monday 26 July, 09:00 pm / 09:00 pm
  • Tuesday 24 Aug, 07:40 pm / 08:05 pm
  • Thur 23 Sept, 06:30 pm / 07:00 pm
  • Saturday 23 Oct, 05:30 pm / 05:50 pm
  • Sunday 21 Nov, 03:30 pm / 04:05 pm
  • Tuesday 21 Dec, 04:05 pm / 03:55 pm

All times are in GMT/UTC to the nearest five minutes.

The times for moon-rise are based on the ideal situation, where no hills or mountains obscure the view and the flat horizon is at the same altitude as the observer. Moonrise is the time when the upper part of the Moon is above the horizon, and moonset is when the lower part of the Moon is about to disappear below the horizon.

'At full moon the water shines like mercury as it curves over underwater hands. One night we swim in silence, sculling long with hands and feet not breaking  the surface of the water, our surroundings noiseless but for the odd lap against the lush, wet riverbanks. We creep past chub and roach, and, hidden in the dark water, they creep past us.'

From Kate Rew's Wild Swim

'Fresh from the absurd wonder of last night's swim: an army of wetsuited swimmers making their way through fields of corn stubble and bales in the dark, then being whistled along by a high flooded river past a silhouetted wood, and nocturnal birds crash-landing into trees. Whether it was the moon shadows that got us, or floating downstream at speed in starfish position with tinkly sounds from drowned twigs in our ears, we will do it again.'
