Calum Maclean, who lives on Skye in the Outer Hebrides, often gets asked how cold the water is when he's outdoor swimming. He doesn't use a thermometer, but has created a handy Scottish water temperatue guide - which starts at "decent", drops to "no bad" (("if water doesn't your your feet pain, it's "no bad") and makes it's way right down to baltic.
