OSS Founder Kate Rew honoured with ISHOF award

Every year the International Swimming Hall of Fame, based in Fort Laudervale, Florida, gives awards to individuals around the world who have made an exceptional contribution to swimming.

This year, 2016, Outdoor Swimming Society Founder Kate Rew was selected to receive the Paragon Recreational Swimming Award as part of the International Swimming Hall of Fame’s (ISHOF) 52nd Annual Hall of Fame Weekend in Santa Clara, California. In addition to setting up the Outdoor Swimming Society in 2006 and acting as it’s director to this day, Rew wrote the best selling book Wild Swim, and founded the worldwide crowd sourced swim map wildswim.com.

Exceptional Contribution to Aquatics

The Paragon Awards are presented to individuals or organizations for their exceptional contributions to aquatics. Rew (who could not attend the ceremony in person) was congratulated by Bruce Wigo, the ISHOF President, ‘for outstanding service and contributions towards advancing the aquatic discipline of Recreational Swimming’ and on being ‘stalwart’ in her profession.

“The distinctive recipients of this year’s Paragon Awards are perfect examples of what it means to push forward with an ultimate goal in mind and to achieve that goal”

Award sponsor Jim Drozdowski from Pentair Aquatic Systems said: ‘It is our honor to sponsor the Paragon Awards, given each year to individuals who have made an impact in the Aquatics Industry whether in the water or out. The distinctive recipients of this year’s Paragon Awards, are perfect examples of what it means to push forward with an ultimate goal in mind and to achieve that goal! We congratulate the 2016 Class of Paragon Award Winners.’

Rew received the ISHOF award ‘for outstanding service and contributions towards advancing the aquatic discipline of Recreational Swimming’

“I am honoured to be recognised by the International Swimming Hall of Fame for the work I’ve done promoting recreational oudoor swimming,” says Kate Rew, OSS Founder. “It’s a boost to be recognized internationally . I thank ISHOF and all those who have worked with me making the OSS the success it is.”

This year’s Paragon Award recipients and their categories are: Glenn Mills and Go Swim for Competitive Swimming; Dr. Barbara Kalbus for Water Polo; Coleen “Cokey” Huffman for Competitive Diving; The USA Swimming Foundation for Aquatic Safety; Ulla Soili Marjatta Lucenius(FIN) for Synchronized Swimming and Kate Rew (GBR) for Recreational Swimming.

‘Drozdowski talked about the award being given to people who have achieved their goal. That’s created a lovely line in the sand for me. In the early days there was general disbelief people swam in rivers and lakes at all. But we’ve achieved so much that outdoor swimming is now firmly on the map in both the literal and metaphorical sense’ says Rew. ‘I am looking forward to having a lot of fun with that in 2017.’
