Artist’s structure used by swimmers

06th July, 2018

Swimmers are combining a swim in Hastings with an artist’s experience

The artist Henry Krokatsis created a SaunaKabin which featured at Freize Art Fair. Located at the Jerwood Gallery in the seaside town of Hastings, Kent, until September 2018, the SaunaKabin is now being used by swimmers, who visit it after a sea swim at Rock-A-Nore and Pelham beaches.

“The Kabin draws on the grammar of the small, feature-rich buildings typically found in British parks and on promenades such as: bandstands, seated shelters, ornate sheds like the timber framed tool hut in Soho Square and The Ostler’s hut in Lincoln’s Inn, London,” says the gallery. It is made from burnt wood, and was then carved by hand.

The space houses an enclosed burner that heats the interior to 80 degrees Celsius, around which is wooden tiered bench seating.
The SaunaKabin is at the Jerwood until 16th September, and interested swimmers can book an hour’s session. Daily sessions are: 11:45; 12:15; 2:15; 2:45.
